Do I Need Vestibular or Balance Therapy?

A variety of vestibular, neurologic and orthopedic diagnoses can contribute to dizziness and imbalance and may be effectively treated through balance rehab. These include:

  • Effects of aging
  • Inner ear disorders (e.g., Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, Ototoxicity, Labyrinthitis)
  • Brain injury and post-concussion syndrome
  • Stroke and other neurologic conditions
  • Orthopedic injuries and conditions

Balance & Dizziness Evaluations

You’ll begin rehabilitation at PROActive Physical Therapy by meeting with a physical therapist who will:

  • Ask about your symptoms
  • Assess your balance and postural control
  • Evaluate your strength, muscle tone, range of motion, sensation and posture
  • Measure your eye movements when your head is in different positions

Dizziness Treatment

After the evaluation, your therapist will help you set treatment goals with you, such as improving balance, increasing your independence, and reducing falls and dizziness. They will then develop an individualized home exercise program to decrease dizziness symptoms and address muscular or neuromuscular problems that affect your balance, which may include:

  • Repositioning maneuver
  • Balance and Gait training
  • Patient education regarding safe home mobility
  • Other therapeutic exercises and activities
